Already a huge commercial success, Australian cult brand AJE marks their 10 year anniversary in 2018. For their 10 year celebration, AJE is again collaborating with the art world, working within the archives of one of Australia’s most prolific, Sydney-based artists, the late Brett Whiteley, and his longtime love and muse, Wendy Whiteley.

For their Resort 18 / 19 collection, Norris and Forest had the honour of working within the archives of one of Australia’s most prolific artists, Brett Whiteley – a man who dedicated his life to his craft, leaving behind a legacy of iconic artworks.

Like Aje, Whiteley had a very unique handwriting and an unconventional voice. He used his art to articulate many things – emotions, sensuality, conformity, liberation, political & social views, and philosophy – but it was his wife Wendy who was his constant source of inspiration as figurative muse, lover and curator.

It was this connection & unique sense of teamwork that the duo called upon to underpin their collection. They drew inspiration not only from the artworks – five works carefully chosen from different series – but from the intoxicating force of Wendy Whiteley. Her unique personal style informed many of the silhouettes within the collection and served to strengthen the correlation between the art and fashion.

Throughout the collaborative process, Norris and Forest worked tirelessly with Wendy Whiteley and Brett Whiteley Studio, the custodians of Brett’s archive, to ensure that the integrity of Brett’s artworks would be preserved during the transformation into wearable form.

The scale of the artworks remains true and the intricacy of the colour palette has been matched as accurately as possible through numerous visits to cross check the prints against the original works. Careful consideration has been given to seam crossings and silhouette concept so as not to interfere with the original form.

Therefore, it can be said, at ten years of age, that the Aje anniversary collection is a celebration of love, of pain, of passion, and ultimately, of teamwork.

The collection was launched Wednesday, May 2 at 4pm to a coterie of cult Aje supporters and leaders of industry including Edwina McCann of Vogue, Kellie Hush of Harpers Bazaar, Ksenija Lukich, Kate & Hoda Waterhouse, and Wendy Whiteley. Guests were treated to a champagne and canapés post show to celebrate the formidable chapter marked in the book of Aje.
