Maison Mumm, France’s avant-garde champagne house, has revealed another unbelievable first in the Birdcage – a Space Odyssey themed marquee, where an out-of-this-world installation – the Mumm Rocket – takes pride of place in the heart of the brand’s two-level marquee.

The extravagant concept is in celebration of the recent launch of Mumm Grand Cordon Stellar – the first champagne bottle designed for space travel, making it possible for astronauts and other space travellers to enjoy champagne in the challenging surroundings of zero gravity.
With space travel set to become the next frontier of luxury tourism, Mumm Grand Cordon Stellar will be the drink of choice for those daring enough to explore this innovative new territory.

The Mumm Rocket is the latest daring installation to feature in the Birdcage, and at nearly 12 metres high, it was installed in the Birdcage two weeks prior to media preview day. Created by a team of over 30 people from Mumm and its partners, including designers, engineers and manufacturers, who brought this bold concept to life, after planning for the last 12 months.

The marquee was officially opened by Mumm ambassador Kate Peck, and the Mumm Space Odyssey Orchestra, who brought unrivalled energy to media preview day, showing that this year the sky is the limit for Maison Mumm.

Kate Peck recently travelled to the home of Mumm in Reims, France for the launch of Mumm Grand Cordon Stellar, alongside Mumm Chief Entertainment Officer, Usain Bolt. While there Kate learned from the team that created the champagne how the product was brought into being, and how it is possible to sip champagne in space.

The Mumm Space Odyssey Orchestra is made up of a group of classically trained performers, including members of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and Melbourne Chamber Orchestra, who performed a mega-mix of space-themed songs including Rocket Man by Kate Bush, Space Oddity by David Bowie and Intergalactic by the Beastie Boys, a taste of what they will be performing on race days.

The installation eclipses even the most courageous achievements from the House to date, which included a $2.2 million luxury cruising motor yacht in 2017 and a fully functioning swimming pool in 2016. As the Official Champagne of the Melbourne Cup Carnival for the ninth year running, Mumm has firmly established a reputation as the place to be seen, and the Mumm Space Odyssey themed marquee will be the best place to embrace the atmosphere of spring racing celebrations in 2018.

Bryan Fry, Pernod Ricard Pacific Managing Director, said: “Mumm Grand Cordon Stellar is an incredibly exciting product innovation that perfectly showcases the pioneering, daring spirit of Maison Mumm. Commercial space flights are really the next evolution in luxury travel, and the idea is something that captures the attention and imagination of the public. It is exciting to us that when this concept becomes reality, Mumm Grand Cordon Stellar is what adventurers will be drinking in space. This is where the idea for the Mumm Space Odyssey marquee was born, and we are very much looking forward to showcasing Mumm Stellar to our guests this Melbourne Cup Carnival.”

One of the first champagnes to grace the supersonic airliner French Concorde, Mumm will now be the first to be served outside the Earth’s atmosphere, when opened on commercial space flights. The Mumm Space Odyssey marquee will showcase the first bottle of Mumm Grand Cordon Stellar, shipped to Melbourne directly from Paris.

To bring to life the concept, Mumm has recruited a team of top Australian celebrities who will appear in the marquee throughout Melbourne Cup Carnival, including star of Dynasty and Unreal, Natalie Kelley, former Victoria’s Secret Angel, Elyse Taylor, model and influencer Ellie Gonsalves, and Australian actresses Jodi Anasta.

Guests in the Mumm marquee will be served a selection of luxurious space-themed menu items, including breakfast gels, a high-tech creation involving egg, bacon and tomato on obulato cracker, the ‘astronauts’ breakfast’, freeze dried fruit salad and pearls in obulato triangle, and a dessert of titanium white ‘apple’ mousse sitting on Mumm red raspberry ‘spaghetti’ and champagne foam.
