Romance Was Born designers Anna Plunkett and Luke Sales launched their latest collection, Step into Paradise, during Paris Haute Couture for the very first time.

Guests were invited to enjoy Romance Was Born’s runway collection, themed loosely on a classic 1980’s high school disco, the venue for Step into Paradise was Paris’s oldest YMCA which houses a gymnasium built in the early 1890’s.

Models frolicked their way across the charmingly aged herringbone parquetries; dressed head to toe in vivid glamour, embodying the true heart of Australia’s Ozotica. These colourful nymphets and sprites weaved and whirled amid cascading exotic florals arranged in grandiose antique Chinese vases.

The looks were inspired by the style and vibrant glamour of muse and collaborator Jenny Kee as well as the Australian landscape; featuring garments referencing the crystalline ocean and our precious natural wonder The Great Barrier Reef, native flora like wattle blossoms and the dramatic crimson Waratah. Including a menagerie of Australian birds and marsupials. Each outfit elegantly topped off with bejewelled birdy cloches, koala ears and soft feathered wigs.

“Step into Paradise has been one of our most collaborative collections yet. We have been truly blessed to work with so many talented artisans and experts in their fields from so many different corners of the world which we have had the pleasure of meeting along our journey – let alone family members!” explains Luke Sales.

Anna Plunkett adds “We pride ourselves on authenticity which is why for ‘kinda couture’ it’s been so important to combine our findings from recent research trips and works from such vast and radical archives, with our heritage and where we come from – Australia’s landscape, and our native birds and flowers are at the heart of this collection.”

Step into Paradise is the brand’s unique take on couture – ‘kinda couture’; an inclusive and detailed look into artisans and creative contemporaries from around the world, including embroiders, knitters and weavers in Abu Dhabi, London, India and Paris.

Luke Sale’s Mum Janelle Porter, a patch worker from Australia’s East Coast, is the driving force behind the Louvre Abu Dhabi inspired look, gained during Anna and Luke’s journey across the globe with Etihad Airways. The sharp and geometric patches, collars and hemlines pay homage to the building’s much adored dome, combined with the local, artisan craftsmanship that’s traditional to the Australian culture.

This is the brand’s second collaboration with internationally acclaimed artist Jenny Kee who provided the brand access into her extensive archive at Sydney’s MAAS Centre for Fashion including work with printmakers, knitters and rug weavers all over the world. Australian fashion designer Linda Jackson’s hand painted designs can also be found amongst delicate silks within the collection, reminiscent of the Flamingo Park era known for its flamboyancy and exuberance.

Once again, this rich narrative allows Romance Was Born the full expression of their unique spirit of dressing. Step into Paradise heroes hand-worked skill, bursting with vibrant colour and intricacies of texture and fabrication; including original fabric salvages from Kee’s personal vintage collection, through to delicate embroideries and appliques made in-house at the Romance Was Born headquarters.
