For everyone out there who thinks fashion is just one giant, trivial, silly indulgence, boy, it can also be the bearer of the most insensitive, callous and embarrassing of slogans.

Enter Melania Trump.

What on earth was she thinking?

Is there not an adult in or running the Trump show room at all?

It’s all becoming more Romper Room antics than grown-up leader of the free world behaviour.
The Air Force One trip Melania had taken was to see some of the displaced children by America’s immigration disaster. Yes. This is bloody serious stuff. It is about human beings. Humanity. Compassion.

Apart from the inexpensive & crushed Zara jacket (maybe the ‘crushed’ thing was her ode to being ‘real’) which was of questionable style to begin with. Here we had the First Lady wearing the most inappropriately graffitied jacket you could even think of.

‘I don’t care, do you?’ It said as she landed in Texas. I mean, seriously, WTF?
Mrs Trump landed at Andrews air force Base in Baltimore in the $52 Zara coat (see, she is a woman for the people!) to workshop and send her undying support to the children – the children she always says she loves so much – but who are currently in the most despicable and horrendous of circumstances.

“I’m glad I’m here and I’m looking forward to seeing and meeting children, but first of all let me begin to recognise each of you and thanking you for all that you do, for your heroic work that you do every day and what you do for those children,” Mrs Trump said.

The usually designer clad First Lady – who has basically the luxury of being able to wear whatever smarty pants brand she likes at whatever price – takes her fashion and hair and make-up seriously.
(Pretty sure that looked like a very fresh blowdry and full TV makeup face to me, as she touched down.)

The whole thing wasn’t just an amusing little fashion faux pas, it was a total and absolute disgrace.’
I can’t even imagine young women look at the jacket as they peruse the packed racks at Zara and wanting to buy it for a political statement. Sure, it may work as a little funky ‘I am woman’ moment – but this was absolutely not the forum for Mrs Trump to be seen wearing it.
Apparently her spokeswoman, Stephanie Grisham, said the jacket was not designed to send a message.

“It’s a jacket,” she decreed.
“There was no hidden message. After today’s important visit to Texas, I hope this isn’t what the media is going to choose to focus on,” she said.

Umm. Yes. Yes we are focussing in it. It was insensitive, inappropriate and just plain dumb.
The president has just acknowledged the sartorial controversy on Twitter – the platform seems to be his second wife – saying the jacket message actually referred to the ‘fake news media’.
To wear it at one of the most critical  immigration crisis turning points was horrendous.

Interestingly, Melanie soon enough changed into a cream blazer. Obviously her peeps had a little word in her ear – not after the wardrobe choice had been universally slammed.
Whoever said fashion wasn’t news worthy? I think after this display will be no one. Ever.
