Tasmania’s Port Arthur re-opens historical restaurant & bar, 1830

Nestled with in the Port Arthur Historic Site Visitor Centre, with sweeping views of the penitentiary, 1830 Restaurant & Bar has reopened with a new concept combined with, stunning surroundings, and a deep connection to history.

After a seasonal pause for winter, 1830 returns with an exciting new menu curated by our renowned Tasmanian chef John Churchill. Inspired by the land, sea and traditions that shaped the lives of the people of Turrakana/ Tasman Peninsula, our chefs reinterpret ingredients and techniques blending them with contemporary approaches creating a menu that honours the stories and flavours of convict-era Tasmania.

“Dining at 1830 is about more than a meal, it’s about savouring the essence of Tasmania’s history and its vibrant local culture,” says Churchill.

“Our experience-based dining weaves history with quality food, offering an immersive connection to the past. We’ve reimagined the flavours of convict-era Tasmania, transforming them into refined, shareable dishes. Designed to be enjoyed together, these creations highlight the best of locally sourced produce.” said Chef John Churchill.

The menu is curated around categories belonging to bygone periods:

  • Rations: Starters such as freshly baked saltbush damper with macadamia butter.
  • Fisher: Seafood offerings like culturally sourced abalone with wattle-seed dukkha and chargrilled octopus with preserved lemon.
  • Butcher: Organic proteins such as braised Angus beef and succulent wallaby porterhouse.
  • Farmer: Vegetarian dishes like charred confit leek with black garlic and chimichurri.
  • Confectioner: Desserts that blend local ingredients with artistic flair, including Cheesecake with local whiskey caramel.

The finest food deserves to be paired with the best drinks. So the beverage list has been carefully selected to also showcase the local regions best wines and spirits, with a selection of Tasmanian beers. Our bar opens at 3pm, where guests can enjoy a drink from producers that include McHenry’s Distillery, Bream Creek Wines, Norfolk Bay Wines and many more.

1830 proudly sources ingredients from some of Tasmania’s finest farmers, fishermen and producers, including:
