Audiences to curate Sydney Symphony Orchestra concert
In a Sydney Symphony Orchestra first, audiences will be able to decide the program for the Orchestra’s People’s Choice Concert (17-19 November) through a nationwide online vote.
Across six categories, voters will have the rare opportunity to nominate works and composers from a selection curated by Chief Conductor Simone Young. The categories include:
From the ABC’s Classic 100 Choose from these most popular works, as voted by the nation, as part of the ABC Classic 100. | Music by Australian composers Selected works by some of Australia’s greatest composers. |
The Great composers If it’s hard to choose a piece of music, just nominate one of these great composers – we’ll do the rest. | Musical discoveries For the adventurous, Simone Young has selected music you might not know, but we know you’ll love. |
Music from the Opera Great orchestral moments from the world of Opera. | Music by English composers Selections from the most celebrated English composers – from the Baroque to the present day. |
In addition to the six categories, audiences will also be able to suggest a work that they would like to hear performed.
During her tenure as Director of the Hamburg State Opera and Chief Music Director of the Hamburg Philharmonic (2005-2015), Simone Young pioneered the concept of inviting audiences to nominate works. The performances were met with great enthusiasm and reenergised the city’s music scene. In Sydney, the internationally-renowned conductor will lead the Sydney Symphony Orchestra for the special performances – an opportunity for audiences to deepen their connection with the Orchestra and Simone Young in her first year as Chief Conductor.
Voting opens Friday 30 September at sydneysymphony.com. The results of the online vote will be revealed at the People’s Choice Concerts (17-19 November).
People’s Choice Concert is presented in partnership with Limelight and ABC Classic. Voters will be offered a complimentary digital subscription to Limelight.
