BridgeClimb Welcomes New ‘Burrawa’ Experience with Sydney Festival
BridgeClimb, Australia’s iconic tourism attraction in partnership with Sydney Festival hosted an Indigenous ceremony at the top of the Sydney Harbour Bridge in celebration of the launch of the new ‘Burrawa’ Climb.
Performed by Indigenous performance artist Matthew Doyle, the Smoking Ceremony acknowledges the Gadigal people – the Traditional Owners of the land on which BridgeClimb operates. It was a moment shared with Climbers ahead of the first Burrawa Experience.
Wesley Enoch – Sydney Festival Artistic Director, David Hammon – CEO of Hammons Holdings (BridgeClimb, Scenic World), Matthew Doyle – Indigenous Performance Artist and Yvonne Weldon – Chairperson of Metropolitan Local Aboriginal Land Council.
Sydney Festival Artistic Director, Wesley Enoch was an honorary guest of the event and said: “It’s fantastic to be part of this groundbreaking collaboration both for Sydney and it’s iconic Bridge,”
“To get up high and see the cityscape through Indigenous eyes is revelatory. There is a deep history beneath the concrete and bitumen and the stories we are telling today help unearth and understand it. I am so pleased to present Burrawa — an unmissable immersion in Aboriginal storytelling — with BridgeClimb in my final Sydney Festival,” said Wesley Enoch.
BridgeClimb CEO David Hammon stated, “As we turn a new leaf in the new year, we are beyond delighted to welcome the Burrawa Climb in partnership with Sydney Festival. As custodians of an internationally-adored icon, today we mark Burrawa as a hallmark of our commitment to honour the knowledge and customs of Our First Nations People. This new Indigenous storytelling Climb is an opportunity for Sydneysiders to uncover and enjoy the immersion of Aboriginal stories that have guided what we know as the modern City of Sydney.”
Burrawa invites Sydneysiders, families and friends to step through history with stories that span thousands of years to the present day.
The Burrawa Climb will run twice a day with climb times starting between 9-10am and 2-3pm every Friday, Saturday and Sunday during the Sydney Festival Period from 8 – 24 January 2021. More information on bookings here.
